BIKES FOR THE WORLD REACHES NEW MILESTONE AND DONATES ITS 40,000TH BICYCLE TO HELP OTHERS OVERSEAS HELP THEMSELVES

On December 5, 2009, Bikes for the World, a DC area-based non-profit, shipped its 40,000th bike for donation to programs overseas that help people who need affordable transportation help themselves. The shipment containing this milestone bike went to the Panamanian Association of Goodwill Industries, a long-time Bikes for the World charity partner.

On the left, Bikes for the World Director, Keith Oberg, places the 40,000th donated bike in the container bound for Panama. The following weekend Bikes for the World loaded another container sent to Uganda which brought the total bikes donated in 2009 to over 9,000!

The bikes donated by Bikes for the World are sold by local partners, such as PAGI at low prices. These bikes not only provide local workers, tradesmen, and students with affordable transport but enable the receiving organization to train and employ people with disabilities, building job skills and providing employment to a population often marginalized in the job market.

In a short time span of five years, the mid-Atlantic network of Bikes for the World has quietly become the largest program of its type in the United States. During that period, the organization has mobilized more than 150 faith communities, schools, scout troops, civic clubs, and businesses and has collected and donated nearly 40,000 bikes valued at more than $1.5 million. It has also developed a reputation for shipping high-quality used bicycles to reputable non-profit partners in Africa and the Caribbean Basin.

Please check out Bikes for the World online, and if the spirit moves you, help them help improve the lives of others by donating your old bicycle, sponsoring a collection of good used bikes in your community to help their cause, or donate dollars.

SOMETHING TO CONTEMPLATE THIS WEEKEND AND CONSIDER DOING IN THE NEAR FUTURE

Consider participating in a volunteer activity at your child’s school in any way you can…the smallest gesture can make the biggest impact with your child. Talk to neighbors and friends, contact the school or a PTSA representative, or go to the school’s website to find out ways in which you can help. Try and volunteer for something that gives you visibility … whether they show it or not, the kids love to see parents working on their behalf. Be There provides us with reasons why your involvement in your child’s education is a good idea and research to back it up:

Parent involvement research can now document:

1.Create a home environment that encourages learning
2.Express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers
3.Become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community

Parent involvement research can now document:
These benefits for students:

1. Higher grades and test scores
2. Better attendance and more homework done
3. Fewer placements in special education
4. More positive attitudes and behavior
5. Higher graduation rates
6. Greater enrollment in postsecondary education

These benefits for parents:
1. More confidence in school
2. Teachers have higher opinions of parents and higher expectations of their children, too
3. Greater confidence in themselves as parents and in their ability to help their children learn at home
4. Greater likelihood that the parents will enroll in continuing education to advance their own schooling.

Read the research, and find out more about Be There here

It Won’t Happen To Me presents DRIVE FOR LIFE – a program designed to educate Teens and Parents of the serious matter that is teen driving. Throughout the program, stories will be shared of teens who have lost their lives in teen driving related CAR CRASHES. There will also be discussion regarding the decisions and choices that cost them their lives and how the accidents could have been prevented. It is said to be a very powerful program and parents are encouraged to attend with their teens.

Location: Dunwoody United Methodist Church

1548 Mt. Vernon Road

Dunwoody, GA

Who: Teens and Parents

Drive For Life Presentation Information

WHAT IT IS…The Drive for Life Programs raise awareness that car accidents are the No. 1 cause of teen deaths in the country; and gives purpose to the loss experienced by families who have lost a teen because of a car accident. These families know that perhaps by raising awareness and through education this way other families may not have to go through what they are.

HOW IT GOT STARTED…These programs are put on by It Won’t Happen To Me, which was founded by Bill Richardson and Lauren Winborne, based on their experience and reserach regarding teen driving fatalities. Bill and Lauren formed It Won’t Happen to Me as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation with the specific goal to reduce teen driving fatalities. This goal has expanded to changing the mind set of teens and their parents that tragedies like this can happen to anyone. So to meet these goals, and because these deaths are usually caused by inexperience and unsafe driving habits of our young drivers, IWHTM seeks to educate teens and their parents. In addition to these programs, It Won’t Happen to Me also puts on an annual “In Memory Of” walk-a-thon for the same purpose.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE…All teens, parents of teens (especially those whose teens are preparing to start driving) are encouraged to participate in the program for a whole new perspective on the responsibility and the serious nature of teen driving.

POSSIBLE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS…If you are a teen check with your school to see if they will give you community service credit for attending the program!

If you need further information please email Bill.

ANGELS AMONG US

LeAnn and Cameron Jackson at the 2009 Angels Among Us event.

Leann and Cameron Jackson at the Angels Among Us 5K

With a big smile on this face, little Cameron Jackson ran the last 50 yards of the Angels Among Us 5K with his mom, LeAnn; crossing the finish line after the greatest battle of his life. Cameron was diagnosed in February, 2008, with Medulloblastoma. After surgery, he endured months of radiation and chemotherapy along with physical therapy to learn how to walk again. During this time, Cameron would often say “I just want to be able to run and play again!” And, run and play he did at the 2009 Angels Among Us 5K!

Angels Among Us is a celebration of life, strength, courage and commitment. It has become a national event, with thousands coming from all across the country to volunteer, participate, and make a difference.

The event begins with a 5K run through the Duke campus, and then features a wonderful family fun walk through the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. It has a family-friendly focus with entertainment, food, raffle, souvenirs, activities and prizes for children, and a closing ceremony where the top ten fundraising teams receive an award, and the grand total for the event is announced.

The success of Angels Among Us has continued to grow each year with the help of many committed volunteers, Duke staff, and the teams made up of families and friends of those who have had brain or spinal tumors. At the first event in 1994, a total of $27,000 was raised. This year’s event raised over $1,410,540. Unbelievable!

Take a look at the WTVD-TV/DT Raleigh-Durham, NC ABC News Segment from the 2009 Angels Among Us 5K.

Save the date – April 24, 2010 – to participate in the next Angels Among Us 5K to benefit the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke—Angels.
