TGIFYGDF…Thank Goodness It’s Feed Your Good Dog Friday!

It’s all about choices….the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shares with us how we can make good choices that lead to a happy heart.

There is no time like now to get started! TGIFYGDF!

Healthy Lifestyle: Diet and Nutrition, Exercise and Fitness

A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons you have to fight heart disease. Many people make it harder than it is. It is important to remember that it is the overall pattern of the choices you make that counts. As you make daily food choices, read nutrition labels and base your eating pattern on these recommendations:

  • Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat.
  • Select fat-free, 1% fat, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet.
  • Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day.
  • Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars.
  • Select and purchase foods lower in salt/sodium.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day if you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man.
  • Keep an eye on your portion sizes.

See CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Web site for more tips on nutrition.

Physical activity in your daily life is an important step to preventing heart disease. You can take a few simple steps at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life. See CDC’s physical activity Web site for tips and more information.

Wednesday Wide Smile

July 22, 2009 by Rose Caplan

You’ve heard it said that two heads are better than one. Well, two hard working passioniate women show us that two hearts are better than one. Through their vision and hard work, and the creation of the Queen of Hearts Foundation, their combined passion will help make countless hearts stronger.

Most women over the age of 50 don’t live to talk about their heart attack. As a matter of fact, most women don’t talk about heart attacks at all.

Katy Atterbery and Carmen Perez know this all too well through their personal experiences with family and friends. So they took their shared passion and mission and created the Queen of Hearts Foundation. Their goals are to make a difference and empower women regarding their heart health through awareness, education and information.

Katy and Carmen believe that the lives of women of all ages will be saved by raising awareness of heart disease in women and through heart health education, and dissemination of information regarding same. Women will live longer and stronger lives through early awareness and detection, understanding their heart history, impact of lifestyle choices and knowledge of overall heart health.

It is also Katy and Carmen’s vision for the Queen of Hearts Foundation to engage kids of all ages. Its Cardio Kids Club will facilitate programs that will educate today’s children and get them in tune with the beat of their hearts; understanding how peer pressure and the stresses of being a kid can impact their heart health.

Further, through community outreach and interactive initiatives, the Queen of Hearts Foundation will strive to educate the community and unite neighborhoods through its Healing the Heart Program – Informing the Community Campaign.

The Queen of Hearts Foundation helps make hearts stronger through heart health awareness, education and information. Now that’s something to smile about!
