BIKES FOR THE WORLD IMPROVES THE WORLD ONE BIKE AT A TIME.

“A bike can get someone someplace … from poverty to self sufficiency.”

Bikes for the World (BfW) is a sponsored project of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association whose mission is to collect valuable but unwanted bicycles and related material–parts, tools, and accessories–in the United States and deliver it at low cost to community development programs assisting the poor in developing countries. The bikes donated to BfW partner organizations provide much-needed and affordable transportation to laborers, micro businesspeople, farmers, health workers, and students. Bicycle recipients benefit in proportion to their efforts.

Over the last four years, more than 31,000 bicycles have been donated, and nearly all shipped overseas. 2008 has been the most successful year ever. BfW delivered more than 10,000 bicycles to non-profit partner programs overseas, making jobs, school, and health care accessible to the very poor.

HOW RECIPIENTS BENEFIT

Here are a few people whose lives have been changed for the better because of the work BfW is doing.

• In Uganda, a bicycle made the difference for Mama Alex between backbreaking labor at subsistence wage, and a decent, independent existence.

• In Costa Rica, William Sandoval commutes to his custodial job in a suburb of San José on a road bike purchased on credit for $20 through Bikes for the World’s local partner, Fundación Integral Campesina. Before, he would pay $36 a month for bus fare. The money he saves helps him provide more for his family every month.

• In Ghana, Sara Aidor was in high school and a member of a health education and HIV/AIDS awareness group. She learned about bike maintenance in a special clinic and got her discounted bike from the Village Bicycle Project, a long-term Bikes for the World partner. According to Sara, “We have ridden our bikes to lots of local villages to do plays about hygiene, sanitation and health education. The people need to learn more about these things so they do not get sick.”

HOW VOLUNTEERS BENEFIT

Those who donate their bicycles, volunteer their time, or make monetary donations to Bikes for the World also get a lot in return. The basic reward for those who donate their bicycles is the satisfaction of knowing that your old bike is being put to good use. Beyond that, the 1,500+ volunteers who collected and prepped bikes for shipment or loaded containers this past year learned new skills and worked together toward a common goal…to help improve the lives of others.

Community organizations continue to find sponsoring a bike collection to be a great way to educate, build teamwork, and further their service missions. For their participation, local young people have satisfied Scout, Bar Mitzvah, high school graduation, and other service requirements.

In 2008, Bikes for the World completed the first full year of the Rockville Youth Bicycle Project (RYBP), providing opportunities to local young people to earn a bike, ride a bike safely, and earn community service hours required for high school graduation.

SO FAR IN 2009

Bikes for the World is approaching 6,000 bikes shipped so far in 2009 to Panama Goodwill, Ghana’s Village Bicycle Project, Costa Rica’s Fundacion Integral Campesina, and Uganda’s Women Prisoners Support Organisation. BfW anticipates adding Liberia to the community of partners, and are actively looking at other candidates, in Africa as well as Central America. They have also arranged for Chicago’s Working Bikes Cooperative to ship to Costa Rica, and to WPSO in Uganda, expanding the impact of BfW’s work.

Please check out Bikes for the World online, and if the spirit moves you, help them help improve the lives of others by donating your old bicycle, sponsoring a collection of good used bikes in your community to help their cause, or donate dollars.

The following two short stories from A Magazine for People and Possiilities, Victoria M Hay, Publisher, demonstrate how a random kind word or gesture can turn someone’s world right side up.

First up is an 18-year old teenager, Brittany Eckert, who needed to hear something positive about teenagers from an adult. And, then, a mom who needed to be reminded of the treasure she had in her 2-year old daughter. This one will definitely receive a prop from any mom who has been on a mandatory shopping trip with her toddler after a long day. Both stories remind us of the power of a kind word or gesture spoken “on the fly”. Enjoy!

From Brittany Eckert

Dear Readers:

This is really little, but it made my day. I am an 18 year old and lately I have been hearing more and more stories on the news about “how awful today’s teenagers are.” Its always sad to hear what people say about the category of humans that you fit into.

I went to pick up some supplies for school one afternoon and I simply held the door open for a frail-looking elderly woman. To my delight she was extremely grateful and said things like “thank you so much!”, and “you teenagers are so sweet these days.” She quickly put a big smile on my face and I told some friends at school. They thought it was really neat.

Isn’t it wonderful how sometimes, the littlest things can touch you in the perfect way? It’s just a thought, but to me an act of kindness is a gift to you, as well as the person you give it to.

From A Mother and Child

Dear Readers:

One day I was shopping with my child after work to pick up supplies needed for an employee celebration. I was exhausted and wanted to get in and out quickly. My child was tired and cranky and wanted out of the shopping cart. She was grabbing for every item we passed. I was losing my patience and temper when an elderly woman came over to us. She took my child’s hand, and said “what a lovely child.” My little girl was quiet immediately. The woman looked at me. She had an angelic smile and then again said, “they are so wonderful at this age.” At once I felt peaceful and in control of the situation. After she walked away, I found a snack that pleased me and my little one and we had a pleasant shopping trip. That one moment of someone reminding me what a treasure I had turned my whole attitude around and made my shopping trip so much easier.

One person turns her intention to give the gift of life into far more benefits for her community than just by volunteering to give blood.

Vanderbilt Junior Caroline Tredway decided one of the things she wanted to do this summer while home from school was give the gift of life. So she went to the American Red Cross website to sign up to give blood, and there she found information about how to do so. What Caroline also found was how to sponsor a blood drive. So sponsor a blood drive she did!

First things first….Caroline called the American Red Cross to arrange things. Then she put her plan in motion. She reserved her community’s clubhouse, as a suitable location for donors to come to; and, to announce the blood drive, she made and put up posters and banners around the neighborhood, and with local businesses. Caroline also contacted family and friends to encourage them to come out and volunteer to give the gift of life, and then she scheduled donors for appointments.

Caroline’s blood drive took place on Wednesday, July 1. 27 volunteers came out to give blood. Caroline was on hand to greet them, hand out informational packets and then visited with each volunteer as they gave blood and recovered with juice and cookies before leaving.

Due to Caroline’s insight and efforts the American Red Cross blood bank was 22 pints richer that Wednesday evening. All thanks to just one person who saw an opportunity to expand on her original plan.
