TGIFYGDF – Thank Goodness It’s Feed Your Good Dog Friday!

July 10, 2009 by Rose Caplan

This weekend…spend an hour giving a part of yourself to others. Give the gift of life with your blood donation.

According to the American Red Cross, the summer months are a tough time of year to collect enough blood for patients to help them battle an illness or injury. People are away on vacation. High school and college students are out of class for the summer. And, many businesses and industries that host blood drives have fewer staff available to give blood.

Yet the need for blood is constant, no matter what the time of year. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. There are countless reasons why someone may need a blood transfusion, including: surgery; serious injury; cancer or burns. Also people with blood disorders may require blood during their treatment.

The reason people give blood is just as varied. They may know someone who has needed blood. They are aware of the continual need for blood and want to make a difference. Or, they know that such a small percentage of those who can give actually do; and some see giving blood as a simple way to give back just because they can.

Please consider taking an hour this weekend and donate blood. You can find a location nearest you by going to the American Red Cross website.

For further information, or to schedule a donation time, you can also visit givelife.org, or call 1-800-GIVE LIFE.

One person turns her intention to give the gift of life into far more benefits for her community than just by volunteering to give blood.

Vanderbilt Junior Caroline Tredway decided one of the things she wanted to do this summer while home from school was give the gift of life. So she went to the American Red Cross website to sign up to give blood, and there she found information about how to do so. What Caroline also found was how to sponsor a blood drive. So sponsor a blood drive she did!

First things first….Caroline called the American Red Cross to arrange things. Then she put her plan in motion. She reserved her community’s clubhouse, as a suitable location for donors to come to; and, to announce the blood drive, she made and put up posters and banners around the neighborhood, and with local businesses. Caroline also contacted family and friends to encourage them to come out and volunteer to give the gift of life, and then she scheduled donors for appointments.

Caroline’s blood drive took place on Wednesday, July 1. 27 volunteers came out to give blood. Caroline was on hand to greet them, hand out informational packets and then visited with each volunteer as they gave blood and recovered with juice and cookies before leaving.

Due to Caroline’s insight and efforts the American Red Cross blood bank was 22 pints richer that Wednesday evening. All thanks to just one person who saw an opportunity to expand on her original plan.

I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. – Edward Everett Hale

TGIFYGDF – Thank Goodness It’s Feed Your Good Dog Friday!

July 3, 2009 by Rose Caplan

Tomorrow we celebrate the 233rd anniversary of Independence Day. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Its purpose…to declare the then thirteen American colonies independent states and, accordingly, no longer under the British Empire. What a huge risk on the part of each individual delegate, especially since they were British subjects and such action would be considered treason, the penalty for which was death by hanging.

All 56 members of the Second Continental Congress knew the risk they were taking, but also knew that they needed to be free from England’s tight reins, and agreed to adopt the Declaration of Independence. They knew by doing so they risked everything, including their lives. Indeed, among other atrocities suffered by the members, 5 were later caputured by the British and died after being tortured. All for liberty.

Since then, many brave men and women have been wounded or died, and their families have suffered in order that our liberties survive. This July 4th, when you are with family and friends, remember those 56 patriots who took a noble stand and paid a price for freedom 233 years ago, as well as all of those brave patriots since then who have sacrificed, and are sacrificing, on our behalf to keep us free and safe.

And, remember…Feed Your Good Dog, so your good dog always wins!

It’s true we’ll make a better day Just you and me”
