• THE TWILIGHT WISH FOUNDATION BRINGS SMILES TO DESERVING SENIORS THROUGH INDIVIDUAL WISH GRANTING CONNECTING GENERATIONS.

Mother Teresa was once asked what is the loneliest place in the world. Her answer was “nursing homes in America.” The Twilight Wish Foundation is changing the way America views the aging process and redefining what is acceptable in our attitudes about aging.

It’s Mission: To honor and enrich the lives of deserving seniors through wish granting celebrations that connect generations; and it’s Vision: To make America a nicer place to age.

The Twilight Foundation believes it’s time to say “thank you” by bringing smiles and joy into quiet, humble lives. They celebrate the life of someone special by giving them an unexpected “thank you” in the form of a wish come true.

Twilight Wish also has an Intergenerational Caring Program that “connects generations” by getting many students and schools, clubs, organizations and companies involved by fund raising and directly granting wishes through our wish management.

Since their founding, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted more than 1,275 wishes. Learn more about the Twilight Wish Foundation in the following Good Deeds On Demand video.

  • A FANTASTIC IDEA THAT ALLOWS ONE TO ACTUALLY SEE HOW A GOOD DEED “RIPPLES THROUGH LIFE’S POND”

SeedaNeed.com is a good deed organization that has been launched to do good deeds Nation wide, and eventually worldwide. The non-profit organization is a web based program that helps people first recognize how easy it is to change a life by doing good things, and secondly helps users track the good deeds by supplying SeedaNeed Good Deed cards at no cost. The SeedaNeed Good Deed cards have an ID number on the card, the ID is entered to the site seedaneed.com, and the user leaves a comment about the good deed, and then passes the card along. This allows an ongoing string of good deeds that can be watched and tracked for the life of the card.

  • CHARITY:WATER CONTINUES TO DO GREAT WORK…BRINGING CLEAN AND SAFE DRINKING WATER TO PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING NATIONS.

Scott Harrison, charity:water founder, tells us in his February 8, 2010 blog post how charity:water uses a different approach to bring clean and safe drinking water to Cambodian families at a cost to charity:water of $60 per family. He writes:

    charity:water logo

Most of the projects charity:water funds around the world deliver clean water at the
community level. Deep and shallow wells, spring protections, rainwater catchment systems, etc.

In rural Cambodia, we’ve got a different approach. Water is abundant here, but rarely clean. We always look to find the most appropriate technology to solve water problems, and here we’ve found that’s the household BioSand filter (BSF) which can serve a family of up to 10 people.

    Here’s how it works:

A big 175-pound concrete box holds fine sand, gravel and rock, and a biological layer of good bacteria is formed that eats 99% of the contaminants as dirty water is poured in the top of the unit. My favorite thing about this program is the personal ownership the families take in the project. The construction is done by family members, and they must also contribute $4 towards the cost.

It costs charity: water $60 to equip a family with a BSF, and we’re looking to grow our impact in 2010 by serving at least 5,000 Cambodian families. We’re finalizing the program details now, and you’ll be able to sponsor a BioSand filter for a family on charitywater.org by the end of the month.

Scott’s photos, which are great visuals that further explain BioSand filters, can be seen here.

  • “THERE IS STRENGTH IN UNITY”

Hundreds gathered united at the Washington National Cathedral to show their support through prayer and monetary donations for the Haitian community. Additionally thousands came from Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia to the Haitian Embassy, literally causing traffic jams, to drop off donated goods gathered from family, friends and neighbors. All of these folks mobilized in less time than it takes to do a days work, but the goodwill generated from their efforts will reverberate a lifetime, and certainly through the rebuilding of Haiti.

Fox 5 does a nice job in the following videos to show us the depth of human compassion and the immediate impact it has on those in the Washington DC area who have loved ones surrounded by the devastation in Haiti.

    1. Wear a nice outfit just for them.
    2. Light a candle at dinnertime.
    3. Make their coffee this morning.
    4. Leave a post-it note with a sweet message on their steering wheel.
    5. Pull out their favorite photo album of pictures of you both and reminisce together.
    6. Put on a favorite song and share a dance. It’s amazing how much closer that 3 or 4 minutes can bring you.
    7. Turn down their side of the bed.
    8. Let them tell you about their day and their dreams, and really listen.
    9. IM just to say “hi” on your lunch break.
    10. Ask their opinion.

16 YEAR OLD RILEY CARNEY…THE TAYLOR SWIFT OF LITERACY….IS A PUBLISHED AUTHOR WITH A PASSION FOR ELIMINATING ILLITERACY WORLDWIDE…AND, SHE IS SUCCEEDING

Riley Carney is 16 years old and has, already in her young life, written a five-book series, The Reign of the Elements. She began and completed the first three books in the series when she was 15, and finished the last two books during this her 16th year. And, she has just completed the first book of an urban fantasy trilogy for teens.

    Riley Carney

On her website, Riley says of herself: “I write for teenagers from a unique perspective – I am a teenager! I try to make my stories exciting, filled with action and humor, and my characters relatable.”

The Fire Stone: Book One of The Reign of the Elements has been published and is available on Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Riley’s books go to her passion of giving the gift of literacy to children worldwide.

Not only is Riley a published author, but she is also very involved with eliminating illiteracy and poverty for children around the world. She believes that teaching children to read breaks the cycle of poverty and exploitation of children.

At the age of 14, Riley created her own non-profit organization called Breaking the Chain with the goal of eliminating illiteracy in children. So far, she has raised enough money to build two schools in Africa and create a children’s literacy center in a woman’s shelter in Colorado. This year, her older brother, Nick, joins Breaking the Chain and they will be working together on literacy and sustainable development around the world.

Congratulations Riley on your successes and for accomplishing so much to change the lives of others for the good in such a short time!
